Sitali Pranayam

Sit in a comfortable meditative posture with a straight spine. Curl the tongue up on the sides and protrude it slightly past the lips. Inhale deeply and smoothly thought the rolled tongue and exhale thtought the nose. Continue for 5 minutes.
Inhale, hold, pull the tongue in and relax. Then repeat for 5 minutes more.

Sitali Pranayam is a well-known practice. It soothes and cools the spine near the 4th, 5th and 6th vertebrae, which, in turn, regulates the sexual and digestive energy. This breath is often use for lowering fever and it can cool you in warm weather. Daily practice of 26 breaths in the morning and 26 breaths in the evening can extend the lifespan. The tongue may taste bitter at first, a sign of toxification, but as you continue the tongue will taste sweet and you will have overcome all sickness inside.

In easy pose, with straight spine, make fists, with jupiter fingers straight out, thumb on tucked fingers.Jupiter fingers cross at middle sections, right on top, at diaphragm level. Fingers are straight & flat.

Inhale slowly and deeply for 15 seconds through nose and exhale slowly & completely and forcefully, through puckered mouth (not whistling) for 15 seconds. Fingers will feel cold. Never do this with a quick breath. Meditate on your own prana carried by the breath, for 11 minutes maximum. Then lock fingers and stretch.
Comments: To maintain youthfulness of mind and body, despite age. Brings health and healing ability ... fertilizes the brain so there is no depression. You may yawn or stretch but keep on with the breathing. Eliminates fatigue, gives constant flow of energy. You'll become intuitive and universally sensitive, you will not get tired.

Short-term meditation training improves attention and self-regulation

Recent studies suggest that months to years of intensive and systematic meditation training can improve attention. However, the lengthy training required has made it difficult to use random assignment of participants to conditions to confirm these findings. This article shows that a group randomly assigned to 5 days of meditation practice with the integrative body–mind training method shows significantly better attention and control of stress than a similarly chosen control group given relaxation training. The training method comes from traditional Chinese medicine and incorporates aspects of other meditation and mindfulness training. Compared with the control group, the experimental group of 40 undergraduate Chinese students given 5 days of 20-min integrative training showed greater improvement in conflict scores on the Attention Network Test, lower anxiety, depression, anger, and fatigue, and higher vigor on the Profile of Mood States scale, a significant decrease in stress-related cortisol, and an increase in immunoreactivity. These results provide a convenient method for studying the influence of meditation training by using experimental and control methods similar to those used to test drugs or other interventions.

Addictions Q & A

1. What is addiction?
Addiction is a thirst for the wholeness that comes from the soul. This thirst for wholeness is replaced by some substitute that can never fill the gap between you and your soul. Physically, it is something that you feel compelled to do that has long term bad effects.

2. How can I help heal someone under the influence of an addiction or addictive bahavior?
You start with lifestyle and you start by the transformation of the person's old impulses and body patterns by using the elements, earth, air, fire, water and ether, because this represent the process of manifestantion. By the time something is an addiction, it is embodied in the gross physical, so that's the best place to start. An addict who's under the pressure of those impulses has a very difficult time being subtle. You must begin where they are and then slowly elevate them to other state.

3. Why begin with the earth element in healing a person from addiction?
The point is to completely change the physical embodiment immediately, so that all experience is different and the person has to make sense out of that experience. The task is to change the level of vitality and to allign the psyche with heart and soul. When one is not experiencing the Self, one starts to compensate from outside oneself. Raising the level of vitality is a very direct way of talking with the body and creating the conversation with your own conscious and subconscious in the realm of the psysical body. That's one of the nice things about the approach.

4. How does society promote addiction, and what is the yogic message of the possible human in contrast?
The message of the possible human is that you are whole, you are complete, you need nothing, which is different from normal society message of incompleteness, wrongness, which creates motivation for addiction.

5. What is the psychology of addiction?
When the Soul/seed/bija/parusha is in the center of the psyche (body/mind) ans you're creating from that center, then we say you're experiencing the Self, you're aligned with your core reality, your central purpose. When you're off center, an unfillable gap is created, which your projected ego, your commotional ego tries to fill. You are acting from a concept of you (not out of wholeness as expressed by the Mul Mantra) rather than the real you. The actions that are created from this displaced center are like waves or commotion that come back.
If your vitality is strong and you're aligned with your true self, you're autono-mous. If you have a lot of vitality, but you're not aligned with your true self, you end up being compulsive. When your energy is low and yo're mis-aligned, then you get dependent, impulsive.

6. What are the three loves of the soul and their relationship to addiction?
The soul has three loves:
1) To manifest
2) to merge, to love, to create identity
3) to be whole, radiant and magnificent
I addictions, there are many ways of trying to fill the gap, depending on where one is off-center, in which of the three minds, negative, positive and neutral or a combination.
Whwn the negative mind isn't handled right, there's a block around the sense of wholeness and magnificence; one gets fragmented. Many times people get into addictions because of not enough attention to a part. Or, a person is in the negative mind and doesn't know how to become positive,so he/she turns to something to damped the negative feeling. In the binge and purge syndrome, the negative mind tells you that a part, namely a food, was left out and that part starts becoming like a shadow, bigger and bigger until you can't control yourself in relation to it. Then you feel bad about binging and you start splitting. You are not acting whole because you didn't handle the negative mind, the part that's separated. Drinking is a common way of trying to deal with internal conflict, especially where it's parts conflict: you feel down, you're in the negative mind, and you don't know how to return that to positive yourself, so you use something to dampen the negative feelling.
The positive mind is connected to the urge to manifest. Sometimes it doesn't happen the way you want it. When the positive mind is blocked in its attempt to satisfy the urge to manifest, you start getting a subconscious feeling of anger, which leads to low vitality and you get dependency, co-dependency. Boundaries are crossed, rules don't work. Or, once you're achieved something, by law of polarity, there comes out of anger or dependency.
The third way is the misuse of the more neutral mind, which corresponds to merger. Neutral mind is about identity, how you want to fulfill your sense of being. When your neutral mind is right, you're creating off of your basic soul. When that's off, there's a kind of emptiness, an absense of the sense o purpose, a sense of unfulfilled mission or the absense of the sacred. Then, you get a deep addiction because nothing seems to satisty that. You'll go from drug to drug, do all kinds of things, and get very depressed.
You can have a combination of all three: confusion of identity; projection-hating things in others; identification with what other people have; entanglement-boundaries intermeshed, crossed.

7. What are three styles of or approaches to addiction?
They can be classified in terms of the three minds: tamasic, rajasic and sattvic; or the three body types in Ayurveda: kapha, vata, pitta; or the neurochemical approach, where there are three styles of drugs; stimulants, depressants and fantasy/psychoactive drugs.

8. What are some of the effects on the system of addictions to common stimulants, nicotine and caffeine?
With the mild stimulants, the brain gives a quick squeeze-a little caffeine, the adrenals; nicotine, norepinephrine-which imbalances the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. To much caffeine, whether it's in chocolate or coffee, upsets the nerves and gives you impatience. When you take in a cigarette, within eight seconds you get norepinephrine pulsing through the brain. It interrupts breathing and takes you away from the kindness and consciousness that is your basic soul. It also takes away your patience, and without patience you can't systematically go ahead and express and manifest as your soul wants. Breathing is so powerful in terms of keeping your body healed, and because nicotine creates the stimulation, after a while it hurts the nervous system and you can't manifest the properties of kindness.

9. What are some of the techniques for treating addiction to these substances?
Alternate nostril breathing is one way to help rebalance the itchiness in the itchiness in the nervous system from an imbalance of stimulation from the outside. If your're trying to get rid of an addiction, cleanse and re-balance the nervous system, then drink 4-8 cups of yogi tea per day. It will give you strength and calmness, as with yoga where you're both energized and relaxed. Yogi tea is very balanced nutritional medicine.
For the immediate urge for stimulation, there is a breathing technique which matches the quick squeezes the brain gives when one has taken caffeine or nicotine. (A little caffeine, the adrenals; nicotine, norepinephrine). The exercise stops the urge in its tracks. It helps to balance the need for outside stimulations. Whenever you feel the urge, do three breaths, done by sipping air in staccato, rapid rhythm by fluttering the tongue up against the hard palate, right in the center, then holding the breath while pressing the tongue against the roof of the mouth. Exhale. After three breaths, your energy is changed and you don't have the same need.
With smoking addiction, drink 3-6 glasses of water in the morning to get rid of all the residue in the adrenals and kidneys. Then, take about 6 prunes, put them in a little water, let them soak over night, and in the morning after exercise, drink the prune water and eat the prunes. Then, in the afternoon, eat a couple of plums, which are for blood purification and help the nervous system. You can also make a prune pie. take out the pits and bake the prunes with ground yogi tea spices (minus the black tea) with a little cayenne, if you like. Take a slice of the spicy prune pie in the afternoon when the energy shifts, starts to go down.

10. What are other two commonly used drugs and their effects?
Marijuana and alchohol. Alchohol damage liver function, decreases the circulation into the joints and hands, and upsets the ecology of the blood. Alchohol will suppress the activity of the right side of the brain and stimulate the left side. With marijuana, the right hemisphere is more stimulated. With alchohol, all the speech functions go, along with other judgment; with marijuana, speech just becomes profound.
Also, with these substances, the whole back brain gets a pressure. In alchohol, the cerebellum can actually swell. Through the use of marijuana, the sacrum, the spinal fluid, the diaphram and the occiput-that whole mechanism of sacral-occipital pumping-gets interrupted because the diaphfram gets cut and anesthetized. The breathing pattern is disrupted and that pump stops, then there's a compression and a pressure in the back of the head that starts occurring. It's as if oil stops going to the motor of the brain and you're running your car without oil.
In addition, neurological problems are created with these addictions. Certain areas of motivation go, neural separations occur in the lower limbic system, and there's a between the two hemispheres of the brain to get a full understanding and representation of the world, becomes disrupted, with marijuana.

12. In the global culture, in the Aquarian age, what sort of drugs are created?
In the future global culture, our technology will allow us to create designer drugs to meet anybody's fantasies. All drugs will be available. We may even create drugs with many fewer side effects. The key reason not to use the drugs is to create a relationship on your own to have the dignity of saibhung, of self-autonomy. Plus, there are very subtle effects in the use of drugs on the prainc body and the more subtle of the ten bodies that are not as obvious as gross physical damage.

13. What is specifically unique about the yogic approach to healing addictions?
The yogic approach to addictions focuses on empowering the person through aligning them with their inner self. It's not about any one particular drug. We do have specific herbs and techniques that help ameliorate many of the symptoms that do come in unique combinations with each drug, but the addictive process itself is undersood to be one of personality, energy and habit. We change the person by lifestyle, by environment, and by relationship.

14. What are some of the juice combinations for healing addictions?
8 oz. carrot juice + 1/2 oz. garlic juce, three times a day gets glands to function.
6 oz. apple juice + 1-2 oz. beet juice for the liver.
Tea of fennel and basic for shakinness.

15. Additional yogic techniques for treating addictions?
Banana fast
Celery juice
Celery and trinity root pancakes, made with garbanzo flour.
Breathwalk, chanting "HAR" as heel hits the grouhd, stimultates pituitary to higher functioning. Breathwalk, with Sitali pranayam: inhale 6-10 seconds, hold 6-10 seconds. exhale 6-10 seconds, cools the nervouse system, repairs nervous system, and gets rid of depression.
Kirtan Kriya; balances the two hemispheres of the brain and gives intuition. SA TA NA MA masters the five elements.
Maha Agni Pranajam is exellent for relieving the pressure that gathers at the occiput at the base of the skull. This often increases a lot under the use of marijuana. Pressure in that area blocks a small chakra that's there that's related to memory and to motivation. Doing Maha Agni Pranajam opens that and restores much of the memory function.
Medical Meditation for Habituation is excellent for braking the basic feeling of impulse. Impulse are regulated by inhibition that comes from the frontal cortex. There's a constant pulse between the old brain and the frontal brain. This helps reestablish that balance.
The Mul Mantra is a powerful technique because it reestablishes you at your very root, or mul. It gives you the ability to empower your word and to create an impact on your own self.

International Day of Peace

In 1981, the United Nations General Assembly established the International day of Peace (IDP). It was in 2001, that the GA modified the resolution (A/RES/55/282) and designated September 21st as the annual date of the International Day of Peace.

The intention of the resolution is to have the entire world observe a day of peace and nonviolence. All peoples and organizations are invited to commemorate the day in an appropriate manner.

An ever-expanding number of people worldwide, representing a wide variety of religious and spiritual traditions, have committed to the task of working with other like-minded individuals and groups for an International Day of Peace Vigil with the following objective:

"To encourage worldwide, 24-hour spiritual observations for peace and nonviolence on the International Day of Peace, 21 September 2007 in every house of worship and place of spiritual practice, by all religious and spiritually based groups and individuals, and by all men, women and children who seek peace in the world."

This global 24-hour spiritual observation for peace is meant to demonstrate the power of prayer and other spiritual practices in promoting peace and preventing violent conflict. These worldwide spiritual observances will also help raise public awareness of the International Day of Peace and directly support the establishment of a global ceasefire. Individuals and groups are invited to support this worldwide initiative by committing to hold a 24-hour vigil on 21 September 2007.

Sat Kriya

1. Sit on the heels and stretch the arms over the head so that the elbows hug the ears (A).

2. Interlock all the fingers except the first ones (index) which point straight up (B).

Sat Kriya is an essential key to the processes of Kundalini Yoga. It is one of the few exercises that is a complete action in itself. That is the connotation of the word, "kriya"; an action or series of actions that completes a process and has a predictable outcome. Most kriyas consist of a series of exercises that synergize. Sat Kriya can stand alone like a precious gem. The main effect is a control and balance of the lower three chakras or energy distribution centers in the body. It does this by mixing the prana and apana at the navel center. This generates a heat in the system and opens the inner channels to the upward flow and rotation of energy. Sat Kriya also rejuvenates the sexual system and helps the brain and body to recover from toxicity and memory loss due to drug abuse. It is good for removing energy imbalances in the lower three chakras and, as a result, is good for problems in the lower back and alleviating mild depression.

A beginning student should start with 3 minutes of this every day as part of a personal practice. The times can be built up from that base.

Posture: Sit on the heels (Vajrasan asana). The heels are straight up into the buttocks, stimulating two acupuncture pressure points, one in each buttock. The knees can be slightly open. Lock in the chin; stretch the arms over the head until the elbows hug the sides of the head. Interlace all the fingers except the index fingers which are together and pointed straight up. Cross one thumb over the other.

Focus: The eyes are closed and focused at the third-eye point.

Mantra: The mantra is "Sat Nam". Chant the "Sat" from the navel point. As you chant "Sat", pull the navel point in with an obvious jerking motion. Imagine you are receiving pranic energy from God / your higher source through the navel point. Chant "Nam" and send the energy back out into the cosmos through the third-eye point.

End: Inhale, hold the breath and apply root lock, squeezing the energy up from the buttocks up the spine and out the top of your head through the "crown" or 7th chakra. Exhale, release the lock and repeat two more times. Relax in corpse pose for at least as long as you have practiced Sat Kriya. (Ideally, the relaxation is twice the length of time as you practiced this exercise.)

The rhythmic contraction and relaxation produces waves of energy that circulate, energize and heal the body. While chanting, the spine stays still and straight. This is neither a spinal flex nor a pelvic thrust. You stay firmly seated on the heels through all the motions of the kriya. The abdominal contraction is focused at the navel point. There is an automatic contraction of the rectum and the sex organ areas as in the lower body lock called "root" lock or mulabandha, but the lock is not forced and is pulled naturally from the navel.

To build Sat Kriya in time and effect, start with rotation cycles: 3 minutes of Sat Kriya with three minutes of relaxation. Repeat this cycle 3 to 5 times. Build gradually. Then switch the cycle to 5 minutes Sat Kriya and 5 minutes rest. You can then add 3 to 5 minutes to the kriya time as you are comfortable until you are able to do an entire 31 minutes.

What It Will Do for You

This exercise is called “Miracle Bend.” It adjusts the navel point and helps bring an emotional and angry person to calmness. 1f the spine were bent to 90° and the breath were four times per minute, it would also totally calm you, but it would take a very long time, whereas this exercise takes only a short while. There will be a strong and automatic tendency to shake in the posture.

How to Do It

In a standing position with knees and heels together, feet are flat on the ground and angling out to the sides for balance, arms are raised straight overhead close to the ears with the palms facing forward. The thumbs can be locked together.

Keeping the legs straight, bend back from the base of the spine 20°. The head, spine, and arms form an unbroken curve with the arms remaining in a line with the ears (1).

Hold the posture and keep the breath long, deep and gentle. Continue for 2 minutes.

From this position, very slowly bend forward to the maximum extent keeping the arms straight and close to the ears (2). Inhale and with the breath held in as long as possible, pump the navel point. Then exhale and do the same on the held exhale. Continue this process for 2 minutes.

To brighten your auric light, have a radiant face and prevent yourself from aging, practice this meditation.

How to Do It

Sit straight in easy pose. Chant the Mul Mantra, inhaling completely before each phrase:

EK ONG KAR; SAT NAAM; KARTA POORKH (let the whole breath go through the nose); NIR BHAO; NIR VAIR; AKAL MOORT; AJOONEE; SAIBHUNG; GUR PRASAAD; JAP (let the whole breath go through the nose); AAD SASHSHHH (releases breath with a hiss); JUGAAD SACHSHHH (releases breath with a hiss); HAI BHEE SACHSHHH (releases breath with a hiss); NAANAK HOSEE BHEE SACHSHHH (releases breath with a hiss).

Each time you inhale you must do so to your maximum capacity and each phrase must use the entire breath. On words like AKAAL MOORT, where the sopund isn't reaslly extended, release the breath through the mouth with a light "uhh..." sound. On KARTA POORKH and JAP, release the breth through the nose. This is the whole secret: the last 4 phrases are ended with the breath released through the mouth like the sound of a hissing snake.

Chant for a minimum of 11 minutes a day for 40 days. Since each person has a different lung capacity, this meditation should be done individually instaed of in a group.

Note: This is one of five meditations given specifically “to prepare for the gray period of the planet and to bring mental balance.”

Power and Effects of the Daily Banis

Japji Sahib: This bani controls one's "ji," one's soul. When your ji, your being, is endangered, when the radiance of your soul is weak, recite Japji. Guru
Nanak said that the thirty-eight pauris of Japji would liberate the humanity from the cycles of birth and death.

Shabad Hazare: This is the highest love letter by a disciple, written by Arjan to Guru Ram Das. Its gift is that it gives the benefits of a thousand shabads,
and one's soul will merge directly with God. It makes the separated ones come home with grace. One who recites this shabad will never be separated from
their beloved.

Jaap Sahib: The naad of Jaap Sahib rouses the soul and the self of the Being. "Sahib" also means grace. Recite it when your position is endangered, or
when your authoritative personality is weak. This bani brings grace and greatness. It will also give you the ability that, whatever people say, you will
automatically be able to compute what they are actually saying. Once you are able to recite it correctly, it will give you the power, the siddhi, that whatever
you say must happen. Man can direct God, and God can direct man. Guru Gobind Singh recited Jaap Sahib so we won't become beggars at the doors of

Tavprasad Swaye: This bani was spoken by Guru Gobind Singh. When you are not getting any satisfaction out of life, this is the bani to recite.

Anand Sahib: Whoever recites the forty pauris of Anand Sahib will have endless bliss, because the Guru is limitless. In this bani, mind and body are
explained in relation to cosmic divinity. Guru Amar Das gave us the song of bliss, which is Anand Sahib, to qualify the mind and to understand the depth.
For husband and wife to get together, recite it together, alternating sutras (lines).

Rehiras Sahib: This bani is recited after one has worked and is tired. It adds energy (raa-hu) to one's being, to one's total concept. Also, recite it when
your principle worldly wealth is endangered. In naad, reh means live, and raas means commodity, so Rehiraas means living commodity. Rehiras Sahib
helps you when you are physically weak, or weak in money, property and earthly goods.

Kirtan Sohila: This bani is done before sleep at night. It is the most harmonious naad ever uttered. It multiplies the aura to the sensitivity of protection that
it eliminates any negativity for miles and miles. When you are endangered by any species of direct or indirect source, and when you want to protect
yourself with the surrounding of the entire magnetic field of the earth, recite Kirtan Sohila.

Siri Guru Granth Sahib

Siri Guru Granth Sahib is the Guru, and it contains the Guru. What is the Guru? It is the formula for experiencing one's own divinity. Siri Guru Granth
Sahib has the power to give one the experience of God because it is a Siri Guru. Here is the progression: Guru, the one who tells you the truth of the
formula, and Siri Guru, the one who tells you the universality of the formula, the application of the entire applied formula. Siri Guru Granth Sahib always
tells you what you need to hear in order to be able to rise above the limitations of the particular time and space. Waheguru is the ecstasy of the experience
of the application of the formula. In other words, by doing what the Guru says, you experience the blessing of that.

The Science of Naad and Gurbani
Naad means "the essence of all sounds." All languages contain sounds which relate to one or more of the five elements of air, fire, water, earth and ether.
Gurbani is a perfect combination and permutation of sounds relating to all the five elements in complete balance. When Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Guru
Nanak, compiled Siri Guru Granth Sahib in 1604, he only put in those banis which were in naad. These compositions were called Gurbani.

When we break up the words, "Siri Guru Granth Sahib," into their naad, the syllables of each word tell the essence of the meaning of Siri Guru Granth
Sahib. Every word has a naad, and every naad has a combination.

Siri means the entire light of the sun's creativity, Lakshmi. Whatever has been created, whatever is possibly created, shall be created or can be created, is
called siri.

Guru ("Gu" means darkness, and "ru" means light) means from darkness to light, from ignorance to knowledge. Guru is one who gives you the technology
to remove your ignorance about something.

Granth ("gra" means knot, "an" means ultimate, and "naath" means owner, master, God) is that which creates the ultimate knot with God. Anything which
creates the ultimate knot with God is called a granth. Granth is not a book and can never be a book. Sahib ("saa" means light, infinity, and "hib" means
now) is the totality of here and now.

How Naad Works In Recitation of Gurbani
There are eighty-four meridian points on the upper palate of a human's mouth. One can feel that upper palate with the tongue and experience its different
surfaces. There are two rows of meridian points on the upper palate and on the gum behind the upper teeth. The tongue stimulates those meridian points,
and they in turn stimulate the hypothalamus which makes the pineal gland radiate. When the pineal gland radiates, it creates an impulse in the pituitary
gland. When the pituitary gland gives impulses, the entire glandular system secretes and a human being obtains bliss. This is the science.

Gurbani is the combination of the tongue with the meridian points. When you read and recite Gurbani, it stimulates your hypothalamus. It is totally
different than any scriptures because Gurbani is made in a scientific way. One who knows the naad, knows the aad, which is the primal creativity. One
who knows the aad is Parameshwar, the supreme God.

The whole language of Gurbani has the power to make a person divine, just in its recitation, if done correctly. One need not be concerned with the
meaning to experience a change in consciousness. Bani has to be understood by the heart, not by the head. There is no power in the head; it is in the heart.
The lead is for God and the heart is for you. That is why Guru Gobind Singh asked for the head, and not for the heart. "Whosoever lives with head to God
and heart for self, that prayer is complete." (Siri Singh Sahib Yogi Bhajan)

The entire Siri Guru Granth Sahib is the calling of the Beloved. It is in naad. The following are the daily banis given by Guru Gobind Singh, and which
tattvas (element) they relate to:
à Japji, Shabad Hazare Ether
à Jaap Sahib, Tavprasad Swaye Air
à Anand Sahib Fire
à Rehiras (including Bentee Chaupaee) Water
à Kirtan Sohila Earth

These banis should be read from the gutkaa (book of banis), so that one does not get engulfed in one's thoughtfulness. They are best read, even though
one may have them memorized.

Experiencing and Understanding Gurbani
The Guru's Word (Gurbani) is what the Guru spoke. It is the imprint of the essence of God. It is the pathway to God. If the ordinary human being speaks
it, it will always elevate him to that state of consciousness of the Guru. The Guru's consciousness is united with God, so the person will automatically get
united with God, if he speaks the same words. It is a scientific and direct way to unite the finite with the Infinite Consciousness. The hypothalamus will get
the same tingling. The impulses of the pituitary will function the same way and get the other glands to secrete also in the same way as it was in the body of
Guru Nanak.

Gurbani is nothing but a total illustrated, facilitated science of naad for human knowledge. It is an individual effort. Read Gurbani in the way Guru says it,
and understand it, and you will be in such ecstasy you will not believe it! Concentration on the construction of the word, and the sound is the proper way
to recite Gurbani. As you are creating the sound, the meaning will automatically come to you, now or later. It is just a matter of time and space. You must
listen to your own construction of the Gurbani. This is the technical way in Naad Yoga.

There are two ways to go about understanding Gurbani. The first is to know the meaning through purposeful study; and the second is to recite it, and you
will automatically understand the meaning intuitively. Gurbani has to be recited with the tongue, through japa. But, when you read meditatively for the
purpose of understanding the meaning, it is okay.

The Power of the Shabad, Gurbani Kirtan, and Nam Simran
In Siri Guru Granth Sahib each shabad has its own individual domain, power, ridhi (worldly riches), sidhi (spiritual power), and nau nidhi (nine
treasures). All occult powers are there. The recitation of shabads gives you the power to redeem the environments. Shabad is a part of the power of God,
and when the shabad merges in you, you become God.

The lotus feet of God is the shabad of God. The sound itself will uplift you and take away the disease and sorrow from within you. Meditate on the lotus
feet of God in your heart. The sound of the spirit is the shabad. Decorate yourself with it. Shabad is the fountain of spirit. It will always keep you flowing
and growing.

The neutral mind records the shabad, the Truth. When your mind is freaking out, the shabad automatically comes. The shabad has the power to control
you and your mind. Otherwise there is no way you or your mind can be controlled. Shabad brings inner balance. The power of inner balance is the shabad,
and the power of the shabad is inner balance.

When controlled, our minds can create great things, because the power of the mind is also very infinite. When disciplined, it can change the vibrations and
the magnetic psyche of the earth. That is why we come before Siri Guru Granth Sahib and do kirtan (singing of God's praises). Kirtan is to change the
magnetic psyche of the universe with those vibrations of the Word of the Guru, the naad, so that we can principally enrich the self in ecstasy.

Nam simran (continuos remembrance of God's Name, of Self) is the preparation for Gurbani. You grind the ground, make the earth ready, and then you
do simran. Simran is gurmantra (mantra given by the Guru). Khalsa is to recite Waheguru, and a Sikh is to recite Sat Nam. Sat Nam can elevate the
consciousness of any person to Infinity, and Waheguru can bring you the experience of that Infinity. Wha means Infinite, he means Thou, and guru means
self. When chanted, it brings you very near God. Sat Nam is a panch shabad (mantra containing five parts). Saa means Infinity, taa means birth, naa
means death, and maa means resurrection. Sat Nam is the shabad in which you have superiority over God. God is a slave in the hand of the devotees. Sat
Nam purifies the entire time and space, when you speak it even once; it does not matter when. It is superior self-power of God. God is remembered by His
actions. Nam simran is a must to prepare for Gurbani to have its effect. It is the complete science of the word and sound. It changes a human's biological
and psychological metabolism of his body, mind, and soul.

Nitnem: Daily Recitation of Guru's Bani
The following is a story which Siri Singh Sahib ji told at Khalsa Women's Training Camp: "There is a surprising story about my grandmother. She never
spoke in a loud voice. I have never seen that woman offending anybody, and I have never seen a single human being offend her. The respect was so great
that everyone would settle disputes by Mata ji's decision, without going to court. Whatever she would say, people would accept it as the truth and nothing
but the truth. That reputation and non-offensiveness was built from her perfection of her nitnem, her sadhana and Gurbani.

I am trying to illustrate to you that after a certain age in life, if you do not have nitnem and sadhana, then you will not churn yourself. When milk is
churned, it takes a lot of milk to make a little butter. As milk has to be churned to make butter, like has to be churned. Gurbani works to churn the brain
waves through the hyp0othalmus. You need not be a Sikh. In India, for example, there are a lot of Hindus and Muslims who recite Gurbani. Gurbani is for
a person who wants to be graceful, a person who wants to be balanced, and a person who wants to do things by their radiance. A person's presence alone
should see the job done."

Nitnem in Gurbani gives you a very powerful meditative mind. It gives you the balance required. Energy comes to a person from the head, and the head is
the distributing center through the spine. It is a must that when one reads Gurbani, it be done in the correct harmony and rhythm.

It is compulsory for Khalsa to read all the five banis daily. They were given so that a person's incarnated personality may elevate itself to defend through
any negativity or misfortune.

Daily Yoga Meditation Shown to Improve Memory, May Prevent Alzheimer’s

Kirtan Kriya Meditation

Kirtan Kriya meditation, for increased mental energy, increased creativity and heightened intuition, utilizes the primal sounds that mark the stages of life. They are: Saa, which means birth, infinity, or cosmos; Taa, which means life, or existence; Naa, which means death or completion; and Maa, which means rebirth. Chant these sounds repeatedly, in order: Saa Taa Naa Maa.

L Form of Concentration

Repeat this mantra while sitting with your spine straight. The focus of concentration is the L form (see illustration above). With each syllable, imagine the sound flowing in through the top of your head and out your third eye point, in the middle of your forehead. For two minutes, chant in your normal voice. For the next two minutes, chant in a whisper. For the next four minutes, chant silently. Then reverse the order, whispering for two minutes, and out loud for two minutes, for a total of twelve minutes. The mudras, or finger positions, are very important in this kriya. On Saa, touch the index fingers of each hand to your thumbs. On Taa, touch your middle fingers to your thumbs. On Naa, touch your ring fingers to your thumbs, and on Maa, touch your little fingers to your thumbs (see illustration below). To come out of the kriya, inhale very deeply, stretch your hands above your head, and then bring them down in a sweeping motion as you exhale.

Let the soul (self) be the alms bowl in which you collect the sweet Naam and this will be the only support you will ever need.

The Universe plays its divine music. The sound of reality is shrill, but this is where God is.

Upajai raag rasaarang
When you listen to the reality from this place of awareness the sweet essence of Raag arises.

Ughatai taan tarang rang
Waves of melodies, emotions, and passions arise and flow through you.

Gi-aan geet bandhaanang
Bind yourself with the song of God.

Chak chak rehay dayv daanav mun
The Universe spins like a potter’s wheel and from it fly demons and angels.

Chhak chhak bayom bivaanang
The sage listens to this and instead of getting caught in either one, the sage drinks the nectar of the heavens and is carried to the heavens in a divine chariot.

Aatam upadays bhays sanjam ko
Instruct and clothe yourself with self control. Meditate unto infinity

Jaap so ajapaa jaapai
until you are meditating without meditating.

Sadaa rehai kanchan see kaayaa
In this way, your body shall remain forever golden,

Kaal na kabahoo bayaapai
and death shall never approach you.

What is Shabad?
Shabad means without the ego (Sha- ego, bad- without). Shabads are sacred combinations of sounds that when recited bring a state of ecstasy, healing, and grace. Shabad is a sound current that permeates the entire being on every level from subtle to physical. Shabad permeates the mind and replaces unhealthy thought patterns with healing vibrations.

One Shabad in particular resonates especially well with the practice of Bound Lotus. We refer to it as the “Ray Man” Shabad, from the first line – “Ray Man eh bideh jog kamao…” – Oh my mind, practice yoga in this way…

In the Ray Man Shabad we journey into the way of yoga, or union. It is an instruction to the soul to practice yoga in every thought, word, or action. It is about living in reality and being human and still achieving inner transformation and discovery of the Self.

When you listen to and/or recite this Shabad, there is a sound current that has a subtle but profound effect on all levels of your being. This sound current travels through every cell of the body and adjusts your inner vibratory frequency to a happier, healthier, holier state. This has been described as a state of grace, the state of the Golden Buddha, and by many other terms in many spiritual traditions.
The Ray Man Shabad is uniquely beautiful and perfect for Bound Lotus. This Shabad permeates the mind with the sacred sound current which allows you to experience your own infinity. This Shabad has eight verses. Eight turned on its side is infinity. (The number eight relates to and represents infinity) In Bound Lotus the physical body creates the symbol of infinity with the position of the body, arms and legs.

The Ray Man Shabad was written by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, who was a master of yoga, a master of poetry, a master warrior, and a master of the Shabad Guru. By practicing the Ray Man Shabad with the Bound Lotus we embrace the essence of Guru Gobind Singh, the essence of fearlessness, and the ability to rise above any challenge, any chaos, or any dream to find the state of pure presence and awareness in the pure golden throne of our own discipline and daily practice.

This Shabad has the capacity, if man is bewitched by incurable disease, if sung properly through the tongue and mouth, can bring total health. Each sound must be said exactly correctly. “Perfection of this Shabad can make you like a Golden Buddha. You will have wisdom, you will have the purity of a Yogi, and you will have an essence. Meditation for the Arc Line

Meditation for the Arc Line

  1. Sit in Easy Pose, eyes closed. Drop your elbows, holding forearms out, parallel to the ground, palms flat. Cup your palms and hold them above your knees.

  2. Move your arms behind your head, stretching your arms as far over your shoulders as possible. Visualise scooping up water and casting it through your arc line, over your shoulders, by flicking your wrists. The action is seamless and rhythmic. Carry on at four scoops to 10 seconds chanting 'Wahe (pronounced Wahay) Guru, Wahe Guru, Wahe Guru, Wahe Jeeo' for a time between 3 and 31 minutes. Do one complete round per repetition of the mantra; scooping up, throwing, and coming back to the starting point.

  3. To complete, breathe in, and stretch your hands back as far as possible. Hold for 10-15 seconds. Breathe out, repeat three times in total. Relax.

Yogi Bhajan comments: 'This meditation is for the arc line and to clear karma stored there. Wahe Guru is just a hand of prayer. Remember the power of infinity is not outside, it is inside. When 'I' and infinity create an impact, you'll become totally Divine. Otherwise there's a duality that keeps you away from reality.'

Commentary on the Meditation

Yogi Bhajan teaches a model of the energetic body as comprising five parts: the radiant body, the subtle body, the pranic body, the auric body and the arc line, each with specific and complementary roles.

The arc line describes an arc of light from earlobe to earlobe, known as the halo. A brilliant arc line is recognised by many cultures as a the mark of a realised transcendent consciousness.

It is seen in magnificent depictions of the Boddhisattvas in Tibetan Sacred art, in the deities of the Hindu pantheon and the iconography of orthodox Christianity.

The function of the arc line is to attract and repel different qualities of energy and store energetic repercussions you have experienced and created in your life. This residue dulls the brilliance of the arc line and reduces its impulse frequency.

This practice enables you to gently erase the tarnished detritus from your arc line using a precise combination of visualisation, projection, sound current and movement typical of the multi-sensory mode of a kundalini kriya.

Maintaining a visual image at the Agia centre, the pituitary gland or third eye, etches the projection at its screen which is then transferred via the visual cortex to the brain and the endocrine system through the blood, to the organs and tissues. Water is a universal healing agent, a global metaphor for spiritual sustenance which quenches the fire in the soul. Water cools, cures, cleanses, refreshes and revitalises.

In the realm of metaphysics, the present is before you and past behind you. The movement of the hands which have the five elements in harmonious balance, showers the arc line with water and carries the spent energetic residue into the past behind you.

The entire bio-system is immersed in the sonic template of Wahe Guru Jeeo: 'ecstasy is transformation of my soul'. This mantra was first recorded by revered Rishi Patanjali, author of the seminal text The Eight Limbs of Yoga, and adopted hubdreds of years later as the 'the mantra of transformation' by the Sikh Gurus, a line of yogi sages culminating in the warrior saint, Guru Gobinde Singh.

Arc Line Meditation

Your arc line can protect not only yourself, but also others. It can also help you project and manifest whatever you want in your life.

The arc line is the 6th chakra or energy center located in the center of the brow at the “third eye.” Your arc line is the balance point between the physical realm and the cosmic realm; it coordinates the inflow of universal knowledge from your higher self and integrates it through your body, mind and spirit. By regulating and balancing the nervous and glandular systems, the arc line protects your heart center so it is safe for you to live with an open heart.

This meditation, also know as Dhrib Dhristi Lochina Karma Kriya, will develop your ability to acquire the insight of the future. Its effect on the subconscious mind will be heightened if practiced on the full moon. Mastery of this practice brings the power to heal with your eyes and inspire with your words. You will be able to project your personality and to know the effect of any cause you begin.

Sit in an easy cross-legged position. Bite the tips of the front teeth together. Touch the tongue to the upper palate and focus the eyes on the tip of the nose. Mentally project the mantra “Sa Ta Na Ma” out from the center of the brow (also called the third eye). Practice for 15 to 31 minutes, 1-1/2 hours.

The Yogic Concept of Death

There are Ten Bodies which comprise the human being incarnate. The soul (the spiritual body) is the finite part of the spirit. The subtle body is the capsule which carries the soul; the soul leaves the body in the capsule of the subtle body. The subtle body reflects the clarity of your commitment, your Dharmic faith and practice.

At the moment of death, the mental body (positive, negative and neutral) tries to send a final impression, a message to the dying person; this reflects the samskaras, the unbalanced impressions and residues left over from the karma of the person’s life. These residues may cause the dying person to attach him or herself to past memories, hopes, regrets, etc., thus interfering with the soul’s liberation. The practice of meditation is the most effective way of resolving these conflicts, and shedding these desires, frustrations and attachments, both positive and negative.

The soul is given a choice, between a warm, cozy, dark space, and a cool, quiet, white snowy light. This is called the magnetic field; if your Dharmic commitment is strong, you will naturally choose the white, snowy path, and you will continue on your spiritual evolution. Choosing the warm, cozy space leads to re-incarnation and more karma. Your spiritual teacher can guide you through the magnetic field; he has the power to extend his consciousness, to penetrate to the third ether, and pass your soul into the fourth ether, during the ambrosial hours of the Amrit Vela.

The soul, on its journey of passage, must pass through and escape the earth’s magnetic field. Those souls who do not are called ghosts. One of the advantages of cremation is that it denies the soul this vehicle of attachment.

Questions & Answers with the Master

Question: What is the kundalini? What is it like when the kundalini energy rises? Is kundalini like electricity?
What is kundalini? It is the whole energy of the cosmos in the individual and beyond the individual. It is the energy of consciousness. Without the constant flow of that energy, you could not live. With a large flow, your mind begins to flow and awaken. You stop living in imaginary realities and become very dutiful to the tasks and joys of life. You experience it when the energy of the glandular system combines with the nervous system to create such a sensitivity that the brain in its totality receives sig­nals and integrates them. A new clarity accompanies your percep­tion, thought, and intuition. Normally you use a small portion of the brain’s potential. When kundalini awakens, one understands the effect and impact of an action at the beginning of a sequence of action and reaction. He has the choice to take an action or not. In other words, a person becomes totally and wholly aware. That is why it is called "the yoga of awareness." Just as all rivers end up in the ocean, all yoga ends up raising the kundalini.
The kundalini is the creative potential of the human being. To get this experience of the kundalini, technology and science is needed. After the eighth year of life, the pineal gland does not secrete fully. Some people think it is functionless in the human structure. Kundalini Yoga activates its dormant potentials in the brain. It needs to tap the reserve energy that is stored near your Navel Point. There is a pure source of energy at the navel area that is known, perceived, and understood by the yogis. It is that pure energy that guides and develops your shape and connects you to this Earth. That connection and that pure energy is still there. It is part of your subtle structure as a human being. All you have to do is uncoil that energy and make a functional connection with your pineal gland. Once that master gland, the channel of the soul, has started secreting, it will give you the power to reach your self-realization in relationship to the total universal awareness.
This is what must accompany the awakening of Kundalini. I mean it scientifically. This mechanism happens but I realize that some people are still ignorant of these processes. If I would have talked a hundred years ago about atomic energy people would have said, "It is frightening. It is impossible. Who wants to do that? That can’t be inside each substance." They didn’t know about the atom, its internal structure, and its potentials. We still have that same ignorance of the internal nature and structure of human con­sciousness and its potentials. People want it but they are fright­ened, they make up stories when they lack experience, and they base their belief on rumor and misinformation. This is a human problem, not the problem of an individual. Without knowing any­thing about what something is or what something actually means, we settle for opinions and get opinionated. That is why I encour­age you to ask questions, learn, and experience.
Occasionally you will see certain people who may not be prac­ticing Kundalini Yoga but who are known to have a sixth sense. They have a unique awareness and inborn capacities. They have an intuitive power which tells them that the consequences of certain actions will be disastrous in the end. They have an inner radar which warns them of danger and guides them toward effective actions. If you have this intuitive relationship between your indi­vidual consciousness and the universal consciousness, you can compute what someone is trying to say before they say it. What they actually say is unimportant. You will know what they intend and what they mean behind the words. This is not very difficult.
Most people are not aware that they have this ability in them. With a little mental work, it can be activated and achieved. This intuitive capacity is natural. The real action behind it is that you become sensitive to the auric radiance of the other person. That radiance comes from the subtle bodies that compose the unseen human structure. All you have to do is compute the signal of the aura as it comes to you. You will know what that person really wants. If a person comes to you, you immediately know his pro­jection. Before he even talks, you just say, "You have come with many stories, but you are ultimately going to ask me for a hundred dollars. Friend, I don’t have it to give to you." I used to speak that bluntly to people, but word started to spread that I am a great psy­chic. People would seek me out for predictions and for their ego. That is not a good reputation for a simple man of God, so now I am very restrained about showing it.

I have a friend who is a psychotherapist. He teach­es Hatha Yoga as a part of his therapy. He told me that Kundalini Yoga is an extremely dangerous form of yoga and that it can lead to insanity if not handled right. Is this true?
It is very unfortunate that some people talk that way. First of all, they do not know what they are talking about. Is money dan­gerous? It is just an energy. Kundalini is a latent energy that can be used for total consciousness. The only dangerous thing is the per­son whose Kundalini is raised properly. That person is totally con­scious. He cannot be lied to or cheated or politically swayed. The kundalini is essential. As long as you practice a total discipline or a complete and balanced kriya, there is no difficulty. In Kundalini Yoga, you will notice that every meditation and kriya has some form of mantra in it. This insures the channelization of the energy.
Second, they don’t have any real experience of it. The truth is Kundalini Yoga produces whole human beings, teachers, and yogis. A yogi is one who has a union with the supreme consciousness. Some people teach yoga as if it is a bunch of dumb exercises, but they have no right to call themselves yogis. To teach this yoga you must have authentic experience and practical knowledge of the technology. There is never a problem with Kundalini Yoga taught as the original sacred science.

What about great visions, psychic experiences, or jerk­ing and trembling after meditation? Is this the kundalini rising?
This is glitter at the bottom of the ladder. These hallucina­tions, psychism, and nerve weaknesses mean nothing. If a student practicing Kundalini Yoga is very blocked up in the spine and pran­ic nadis, he may have a one time experience when the channels are cleared. But that is one time, brief, and does not disrupt anything. These things may happen when someone's nervous system has not been properly prepared, or if they do not use the mantra or breathing technique properly. The real measure of kundalini rising is your consciousness from breath to breath and courage you bring to your life. These momentary flashes brought on by weakness have nothing to do with kundalini.

Is the goal for the yoga student to bring all the energy into the brain?
No! The energy of kundalini releases from the navel cen­ter, then rises to the top of the head. When it descends to com­plete its cycle of energy, the chakras open fully. By chakras open­ing I mean the talents of each chakra are consolidated into the character and behavior of that person. It does no good at all to fill a person with energy that he cannot integrate.

Most Kundalini Yoga students let their hair grow. Is this necessary?
No. You can practice with any length hair, but the hair was the first technique to raise the kundalini energy. When the hair is at its natural full length and coiled over the anterior fontanel for men or the posterior fontanel for women, it draws pranic energy into the spine. The force of this downward positive energy causes the Kundalini energy to rise for balance. This is why you always find grace and calmness in a person with uncut hair from birth if they keep it well. Actually the hair was so important that the word for consciousness, kundalini, actually derives from kundal which means “a coil of the beloved's hair.”
You referred to the chakras as centers of con­sciousness. Would you describe the qualities each gives?
There are seven centers in the body. They are all in the spine. They each have a projected center or chakra. First is the rec­tum. Second projected center is the sex organ. Third is the navel cen­ter. When you pull the rectum and sex organ together, the energy projects to the third center of consciousness. Fourth is the center between the two nipples, the heart center. Fifth is the neck. Sixth is between the two eyes at the top of the nose. And the seventh is the last at the top of the head, corresponding to the pineal gland.
Do these centers have some correlation with the human? Yes. A person whose consciousness dwells in the rectum will never have a normal, direct sexual relationship. One whose center of con­sciousness is the second center will define themself in terms of sex, may even use pain or other forms of intense stimulation as an approach to pleasure in sex. At the third center of consciousness a person can't overcome greediness. He may try his level best. Somehow he will like to get others' things. They may be useful to him or not. The fourth center of consciousness is the heart center where the nipples and throat form a triangle. Here a person gets knowledge. The fifth center of consciousness is at the throat. He may talk without flowery English, but his words will have that weight that goes right into the heart. At the sixth center of con­sciousness, a person can know everything around him. He may use the knowledge or not. The pituitary gland gives him the greatest intuition. At the last center of consciousness, which is the highest center, a person becomes most humble. He has extreme humility. In the highest center the ego becomes universal ego, so that per­son has no pain and no pleasure. What he says happens. That is the highest center of consciousness. In a long deep meditation, you can know where your consciousness is. It can be seen and judged by assessing what your environments are and what are the most important needs in your life. You can know which chakras you are operating from.
Now, knowing does not make any difference. Can you pull it up and change gears in such a way that you can come out of it?

Is it possible for a teacher to raise the kundalini of his students just by his presence?
The kundalini can be stimulated directly by a teacher. But that teacher is not much of a teacher! The students should be pre­pared, then given a technology to raise it themselves. Why should they wait at the feet of a teacher like puppies? They should go through the experience, then share the techniques with others.
Does a student of Kundalini Yoga have to be celibate?
The student should be a householder, raise a family and fulfill the obligations of a spiritual society. Celibacy actually means to be by yourself without abusing your sexual and regenerative abil­ities. A married person is by himself, for both people are merged as one. Even in marriage the sexual energy is respected and built up. A normal couple will find a frequency of one time a month com­pletely satisfying if approached correctly. If you want to be celibate without ever having sex, remember to practice Sat Kriya each day so you can utilize the energy and not go nutty.

When the kundalini rises, do you go into trance or become rigid?
A raised kundalini will give you grace of motion. Life fills every cell so you are able to move smoothly with an awareness of the rhythm and music of all your environments. The kundalini makes you alive and graceful, not rigid like some kind of death.
Why are these teachings being shared so openly now?
The techniques belong to those who practice them. They are the heritage of humanity. I am just a postman with a lot of let­ters to deliver. You can open them and use them or not—that is your problem. But the world is going through changes. Your future generations will need these techniques to stay mentally healthy and physically strong. These teachings will help humanity as it awak­ens from adolescence. I am sharing these teachings to create a sci­ence of the total self.

Ten Bodies

1. Soul Body - everlasting and beyond time and space - your essence
2. Positive mind - collects information and analyzes how you can use it to move your projects forward, to accomplish and be optimistic
3. Negative Mind - helps you see what you need to avoid in order to move forward
4. Neutral Mind - the jewel of the mind, the yoga mind, that lives a "mutual life," that has relationship without attachment — your mind working in a balanced way that sees reality and experiences win-win negotiations
5. Physical body -the temple of your spirit
6. Arc line - your integrity manifested in your energy, like your halo, that holds the imprint of your past actions -on which your destiny is said to be "written" and visible to those who can perceive it
7. Aura - your projection of light and energy, changing subtly with each thought vibration, action, feeling — represents your consciousness
8. Pranic body -the circulatory system of your Ten Bodies and your Chakras, or your energy level - allows you to receive energy from the universe, transform it into more subtle vibrations, thoughts, actions, and creativity
9. Subtle body - surrounds your soul and gives you the experience of detail and perception in the subtlest realms
10. Radiant body - your non-local experience that gives you the capacity to sense what is happening far away, as well as within range of your hearing, sight, smell, and touch — the expansiveness you feel when you have strong ability to travel in mind and sensation beyond time and space

You may believe that you have one body to care for, but, in fact, each of us has ten bodies. The physical body is just one of those bodies. The other nine are: the soul body, the three mental bodies (negative mind, positive mind and neutral mind), the arc line, the aura, the pranic body, the subtle body and the radiant body. Each of the ten bodies is significantly interactive with the others. When we see the human form as composed of ten bodies, we can understand the dynamic interactive nature of the different aspects of our humanness and optimize their function and health through yoga.
The soul is our timeless body that contains our being, consciousness and personality. The negative mind calculates risk. The positive mind calculates benefit. The neutral mind compares risk and benefit. (The mind is always calculating, isn’t it?) The arc line is the halo around us that guides and controls our aura. The aura is the electromagnetic body that protects us from other people’s negativity, gives us extra sensitivity to our environment and acts as a filter in both our internal and interpersonal communication. The pranic body gives life to the physical body and is connected to it through the breath. The subtle body is connected to the soul body and gives us the capacity to learn quickly and relate to the nuances of life. Finally, the radiant body gains its radiance from the activity of the other bodies, and when it is well proportioned is perceived as courage and has magnetic attraction.
